New research indicates that people who discontinue blockbuster GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on reduced body mass far faster than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Published data in a prominent medical journal points out that while overweight individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People using such treatments must be informed of the danger of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment ends," stated expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery implies a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.
Analyzing Treatments
The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.
Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone generally experience a more gradual creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
The Reason for the Rapid Regain
Doctors suggest the way of the drugs explains the accelerated regain.
The injections copy a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production might result in the system to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous GLP-1, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition expert.
"Stopping of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making excessive eating much more probable."
A Chronic Disease?
The NHS advise the jabs for people with weight-linked health risks, accompanied by prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts contend that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy is often long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the long-term nature of excess weight," similar to managing conditions like hypertension.
Patient Accounts
Users who have stopped the medication explain a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"It felt as if something that goes on and you're instantly starving," described one woman.
This difficulty is worsened if users have not adopted lasting lifestyle or habit changes during treatment.
Widespread Adoption
Survey data suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.
- Adoption is higher among females than males.
- The middle-aged age group shows the greatest level of interest.
- Many access the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, clinicians stress that while the jabs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone cure and long-term success hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
